Although they represent the digital age, and are often referred to as digital natives, students do not appear to be doing as much online shopping as predicted. A quarter of the students interviewed have never bought something online, according to the latest SA Student Spending Report.
The most popular online items are airline tickets and travel bookings, including bus travel, followed by books, clothes and shoes, airtime and music. If we compare this to the estimated 77% of South African's overall that do have internet access, it is a low percentage. This could be explained by the previous research results which show that students are predominantly cash-oriented. But what is most revealing, is that of those students that have not yet shopped online, the majority (84%), would be willing to shop online if they had the opportunity and resources, such as a credit card.
