If we take a deeper look into the SA Student Spending Report, students buy a wide range of goods but their main expenditure every month is on food, groceries and eating, this coming to around R650 a month. Rent follows at about R500, with clothing & footwear coming to the same average amount. Following this was entertainment such as clubbing and movies, toiletries and cosmetics and airtime.

What's really important to take note of here is that these are the average figures that have been deduced from the overall research and give us a birds-eye view of student spending, though they don't necessarily depict the average student. And remember the first outcome of this research was that there is no such thing as an average student. For example, if we were to look only at the segment of students that are living at home with family, the RENT amount would cease to be applicable....and if we looked only at how male students are spending their money, then toiletries and cosmetics would severley lessen and more would be spent on alcohol (R197pm).
