Amazingly with all this spending, close to half of all students ACTUALLY DO manage to save some of their income. This, according to the latest SA Student Spending ReportOf these, the majority (84%) save just shy of R500 per month. Extrapolating this to the broader higher education population, it represents a total saving of approximately R1.3 billion per annum a possible figure of relevance to banks! Comparing this to the broader South African population, students' saving rates are way above the South African household saving rate, which is sitting at 0.28 percent according to the National Treasury.
