Career Development

Student Village’s career development division delivers the perfect match between companies and the young talent they need – with solutions covering print, online, mobile, physical on-campus and peer-to-peer marketing.

The division is headed up by Fay Humphries. She has a passion for the perfection of the art of effective communication across all platforms, and believes that granting someone the ability to make an informed decision empowers them to make inspired choices.

As such, the various offerings here – including the leading graduate recruitment and career development annual publication on SA campuses, GradX, and the largest student-focused SA career portal, www.gradx.net – are all tailored around getting the right talent in touch with the right employer in the right way.

What we do

GradX is Student Village’s sought-after graduate career magazine. It was recently identified by Sagra as the ‘most useful’ independent annual career-oriented magazine by final-year students on SA campuses for the second consecutive year.

A high quality publication, it introduces the Who’s who of graduate recruitment and development programmes to students at tertiary campuses countrywide – in a format that combines invaluable career-advancing advice alongside a host of lifestyle issues. It provides companies looking for young talent instant entry onto campus, and is also an invaluable platform for influencing buying patterns and financial decisions among graduates.

It has a strong entrepreneurial component, backed up by a comprehensive entrepreneur’s resources directory. It also assists students who are considering taking a gap year or completing a post-graduate qualification.

35 000 copies are distributed directly to final-year students art more than 40 campuses in July each year at the beginning of the second semester.

GradX.net website

www.gradx.net is a complete online career portal for the student and graduate market. It carries all the content from our leading career publication, GradX, as well as topical career-related news which is refreshed and updated throughout the year.

With over 92 000 students already registered users of www.gradx.net, this online resource continues to grow on a daily basis – demonstrating the need for easy-to-access and current career-related information by SA students. Users range from first-year students, right through to recent post-graduates.

The key to the site’s success it that it provides useful information to students, together with all the tools they need to prepare themselves for life in the workplace, including an interactive ‘Ask the Expert’ section where they can get online career advice.

Like GradX, www.gradx.net offers companies more than just an advertising medium. It offers an opportunity to educate users about their companies, the industries in which they operate, and the type of career paths they have available.

Campus brand ambassadors (CBAs) are starting to play an increasing role in unpacking employer brands on campus. Student Village is known for its expertise in this space, have executed dozens of CBA-led campaigns on behalf of consumer brands over the past 10 years. This expertise is now being used to build employer brands on campus as well. Our CBA campaign for SARS, for example, saw this company’s brand moving up five places in the commerce category of a national employer brand awareness survey carried out in the same year.

Not only do our CBA campaigns deliver on campus, they also provide valuable development opportunities to participating students, which in turn adds value to graduate recruiters looking for well-rounded candidates to join their ranks.

Each CBA campaign is tailored to the specific requirements of the client, ensuring that a cohesive message about their recruitment programmes is delivered to the appropriate students in a professional manner using peer-to-peer marketing.

Companies looking to recruit graduates and / or attract bursary candidates are often hampered by restricted advertising budgets, not enough staff members to handle incoming CVs, and no real access to in-house technical resources.

The CV application database offered by www.gradx.net addresses of these issues in a simple, hassle-free manner. It allows participating companies to be very specific about what type of graduates / bursars they want, and lock out CVs from applicants who don’t fit these criteria.

To date, participating companies include Hatch, Vodacom, Pick ‘n Pay, Platinum Life, North Road Consulting, Colgate Palmolive and Anglo American – all companies with very different requirements that operate in very different sectors. The key to the success of this offering is our ability to customise it to fit niche recruitment requirements while being able to market it to students nationwide.

Many companies have limited resources when it comes to planning and executing annual road shows across campuses. As such, booking and attending several career fairs in different provinces during the year, as well as tracking all the on-campus marketing, can turn into an administrative nightmare for graduate recruiters.

Our GradX team members are all skilled and enthusiastic project managers who have taken several clients to the campuses of their choice throughout the year. We ensure that the logistics run smoothly, stands get set up, and that the marketing collateral arrives at each campus on time and gets distributed efficiently.

In fact, all the graduate recruiters need to do is catch their planes on time and turn up to chat to students at their respective stands. So – if you’re in a position where you need an extra pair of hands on campus, give us a call. We’re here to help.
